外傷性膝蓋骨脱臼（acute traumatic dislocation of the patella，ATDP）は大部分のものは外側脱臼であり，解剖学的構築上の異常（脱臼素因）を伴うことが多い（表1）．それを伴わないATDPは相当の外力が必要であり，発生も稀といわれている．またosteochondral fractureは膝蓋骨脱臼整復時に発生するものが大部分であることもよく知られた事実である．
しかし，ATDPに関する報告は少なく，事実習慣性膝蓋骨脱臼（recurrent dislocation of the Patella，RDP）に移行して受診する機会が多いようである．
