Background:As a guide, the black dot inscribed on the drain marks the point the drain is secured to the skin. However, if the black dot is used as a guide and the most proximal slits in the flutes are placed in muscle or fascia, the suction provided by the BLAKE® Drain is markedly reduced.

Method:We compressed the most proximal slits in the flutes of the BLAKE® Drain and checked the power of drainage in the in vitro study.

Outcome:In the in vitro study we demonstrated that the BLAKE® Drain provided minimal drainage when the most proximal slits in the flutes were compressed.

Conclusion:This indicates that when the BLAKE® Drain is placed, the most proximal slits in the flutes, which provide the most effective suction, should be kept at the site requiring drainage regardless of the position of the black dot on the drain.
