Background:The Brief Scale for Psychiatric Problems in Orthopaedic Patients (BS-POP) is a questionnaire that was designed to evaluate psychosocial problems in orthopaedic patients. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the preoperative BS-POP scores of lumbar disc herniation patients and their surgical outcomes.
Methods:Thirty lumbar disc herniation patients were the subjects of this study. The subjects were divided into two groups according to their preoperative BS-POP scores and compared prospectively.
Results:The group with BS-POP scores in the abnormal range had lower physical function and social life function scores on the MOS 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) than the group with BS-POP scores in the normal range. These findings predicted poorer quality of life one year postoperatively in the group with preoperative BS-POP scores in the abnormal range.
Conclusion:The BS-POP can be used as a preoperative screening tool to predict poor surgical outcomes.
