Purpose:The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the psychological competitive ability of female high school athletes and the occurrence of ACL injuries.
Methods:A 3-year prospective cohort study of 101 female high school handball and basketball players was conducted. Psychological competitive ability was assessed by a self-administered questionnaire, the DIPCA.3. After the baseline examination all athletes were followed up for 36 months to register occurrences of ACL injuries, and we then compared the psychological competitive ability of the injured athletes and uninjured athletes.
Results:Six (5.9%) of the 101 athletes sustained an ACL injury. The group of athletes who sustained an ACL injury had significantly higher total DIPCA.3 scores and significantly higher scores on several DIPCA.3 scales than the group with no ACL injuries.
Conclusions:The occurrence of ACL injuries can be influenced by psychological factors. The results of this study suggested that understanding the characteristics of athletes related to their psychological competitive ability may lead to improved prevention of ACL injuries.
