To clarify the prognosis of traumatic cervical spine syndrome (TCS) caused by traffic accidents, we carried out clinical assessment of TCS patients after their accident compensation period expired. Fifty-one patients were enrolled and 33 (men, 18;women, 15) were able to respond to verbal questions. Twenty-six (79%) patients presented with no symptoms at the follow-up. There was no significant difference in the initial cervical alignment, range of motion, medical expenses, number of hospital visits, and patient impression of compensation between those presenting with symptoms and those who had recovered. Management of TCS patients with longstanding symptoms should be reconsidered, along with investigations regarding the validity of intervention and detection of prognostic factors.
