  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The endocardial endothelial cells (EEC), a layer ofcells lining the intracavitary lumen of the heart, separates circulating blood from the underlying myocardium. Recently, EECs, like vascular endothelial cells(VEC), have been found to release a number of vasoactive substances including PGI2, EDRF (NO) andendothelin.

We have established the separation and culture ofporcine EECs, and studied the physiological roles of EECs. It is postulated that EECs can modulate thecontractility of the subjacent myocardium and preventintraventricular thrombus formation although the mechanism of these events is not fully understood. The finalaim of our study is to assess the mechanism of heart failure.
