A defibrillator generating single or double square wave pulses was manufactured. Ven-tricular fibrillation was electrically induced in anesthetized, heart-exposed dogs. After 10 to 20 sec of fibrillation the square wave shock being investigated was supplied to the heart.

Impedance of the heart estimated at defi-brillation in 14 dogs ranged from 32 to 45 ohms with the average of 37 ohms. Under various conditions successful defibrillation was achieved at the energy of about 0.2 to 5.0 watt-sec. With double pulses the effec-tiveness of defibrillation was not significantly altered by changing pulse interval from 100 to 400 msec. Therefore, the optimum pulse interval could not be found. With single pulse as well as double pulses the optimum pulse duration in dogs was 10 to 20 msec from the standpoint of energy.

There was no significant difference in percentage of successful defibrillation bet-ween single and double pulses of the same pulse duration and amplitude. In six clinical cases undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass successful defibrillation was obtained with square wave pulses at the energy level of 1.25 to 5.0 watt-sec.
