Postoperative delirium(POD)is associated with impaired activities of daily living(ADLs)after surgery, long-term cognitive impairment, and increased mortality and medical costs. Addressing POD is thus a critical issue in clinical settings. There is currently no effective treatment for POD backed by high-quality evidence;it is therefore crucial to attempt to prevent POD. Active intervention should be undertaken at each stage of the perioperative period. Healthcare providers must first understand the risk factors for POD onset and screen their patients to identify those at high risk. This section, following the Practical Guide for the Prevention and Treatment of Postoperative Delirium in the Elderly published by the Japan Society of Anesthesiologists in 2024(hereinafter referred to as the Practical Guide), lists risk factors for POD onset in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the perioperative period and explains each risk factor.
