A 61-year-old man complained of difficulty in using tools after suffering a stroke. The defect in using tools was caused by limb kinetic apraxia and Gerstmann syndrome. Analysis of the process of using tools revealed ease in choosing the tool and reaching out, but difficulty in grasping the tool. In particular, he could not form his hands into the proper shape for grasping tools. Occupational therapy included tasks for forming hands into the proper shapes for grasping tools using 10 commonly used tools in daily-life, and practicing using spoons and chopsticks, which he had been unable to use in activities of daily living. As a result, the patient became able to use the tools, indicating the effectiveness of the occupational therapy intervention.
