G-SCAMBIO is a regional exercise program designed specifically for patients suffering from mental illness. Schizophrenic outpatients from the Kansai Medical University Hospital Psychiatry Department who participated in the program exhibited positive outcomes in the areas of cognitive function, anti-obesity and interpersonal communication. Patients' symptoms should be stable in order to garner positive effects of the therapeutic exercise. Moreover, to maintain long term participation in the program, patients must be interested in the program, desire exercise and have adequate physical strength. It is important that OTRs select sports suitable to the patients' age and goals. Participation in the program relieved the patients' symptoms, although continued follow up and collecting feedback on the part of the occupational therapists are important for continued success.
