The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of mirror therapy on arm function in stroke patients. Standardized mean difference was used to estimate the effectiveness through reviewing previous randomized controlled trials. We identified five trials which reported a positive effect of mirror therapy on arm function in patients with severe hemiparesis. Standardized mean difference could be calculated for three trials producing large effect size of the Brunnstrom Scale for the upper extremities, including the hand, and a somewhat large effect of Fugl-Meyer Assessment for fingers. The results suggest that mirror therapy has a potential to positively affect arm function in stroke patients equivalent to other therapies.
