For patients with schizophrenia, antipsychotic-induced constipation is a serious problem. The use of lactosucrose may promote an increase in the number of bifidobacteria, which balances intestinal flora, and aids in reducing constipation. However, it is not clear whether this intervention is useful for patients with schizophrenia. Thus, the present study investigated the effect of lactosucrose on constipation in schizophrenia. Results showed that lactosucrose improved stool frequency and consistency, regardless of antipsychotic dosage. Overall, it appears that lactosucrose could be useful in alleviating constipation in patients with schizophrenia.
