In several studies, the understanding and views of the general public on dementia or Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been analyzed. However, no study exists on the understanding of degenerative dementia, including dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), or semantic dementia (SD). In this study, the recognition and understanding of degenerative dementia by university students were examined.

In April 2009, 197 university students were asked to rate on a scale from 1 to 5 whether the symptoms characteristic of AD, DLB, FTD, or SD were actually caused by the respective dementia.

The results revealed that most students thought that some symptoms of AD could be caused by this dementia, but they did not think that visual hallucinations were caused by DLB and food preference, by FTD. With regard to recognition of the disease, 194 (98.48%) of 197 students knew about AD, whereas only 5 (2.54%) of 197 students knew about DLB;19 (9.64%), FTD;and 6 (3.05%), SD. These results indicate that DLB, FTD, and SD are not well known among the general public.
