Purpose: We have developed a scale, which we named the "Perceived Home Management Hassles Scale".

Methods: Seventeen items were developed based on previous articles related to childcare, caregiving, and housework. A web-based survey was conducted among members of a nursing academic society. The researchers engaged in discussions to select appropriate items considering factors such as the ceiling/floor effect, non-response rate, item discrimination(using the graded response model), and content validity. The total scores of the selected items were compared based on the childcare/caregiving status, and correlation coefficients were calculated in relation to a parenting stress scale and a caregiver burden scale. Furthermore, we calculated the area under the curve(AUC) to predict the group that requires intervention based on the parenting stress scale.

Results: We received responses from 433 respondents, ranging in age from their 20s to over 60s. Of these, 376 were women, 143 were raising children, and 60 were caregivers. Five items were selected based on the distribution of responses and content validity. The total score was significantly higher for those involved in either childcare or caregiving(9.2 vs. 6.3, p < 0.001; 8.8 vs. 7.1, p = 0.019). The total score correlated with parenting stress and caregiver burden(|r| = 0.27-0.53), and was able to predict the group that requires intervention(AUC = 0.823).

Conclusion: We developed a 5-item, 5-point Likert scale that can be self-administered and completed online. It is suggested to have content and psychometric validity.
