TREATMENT OF CANCER OF THE LARYNX
Sasaki treats patients with early cases of vocal cord cancers in which the lesion is limited to either cord, by exposing them to radium irradiations. But, he states that, with those the disease is found to be progressed beyond this stage, total laryngectomy is invariably the method of choice. Of 195 cases treated consecutively in the past 11 years, 13 cases came under irradiation and 56 cases under total laryngectomy;while the remaining cases had no alterna tive other than symptomatic treatments be cause of their advanced diseased conditions.
Two radium needles of 3 mg. each are firmly attached to a platinum plate 2 mm. thick to form an applicator. It is inserted well within the boundries of the thyroid cartilage. Quantitatively the volume of it radiation ranged from the minimum of 1584 mg to the maximum of 4017 mg, with a mea naverage of 2705 mg.
