The objective of this study was to clarify the stressful experiences associated with hospitalization and treatment among childhood cancer survivors as well as sources that reduce stress. A qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews was conducted on eight adult survivors of childhood cancer. Five categories of stressful experiences of childhood cancer survivors were identified: [shock at onset of illness][severe suffering from illness and treatment][disadvantages associated with explanations of illness and treatment][ hospitalization endured without choice despite suffering] and[ diffculties after discharge]. Four categories of sources that reduce stress were identified: [support from people involved during hospitalization][support from parents] [enjoyable aspects during hospitalization] and [understanding from people involved after discharge]. These stressful experiences are considered to be serious ethical issues that could hinder a child's sense of security and development. It is believed that sources that reduce stress can provide a child with security and the strength to overcome treatment, and thus can be applied as a practical example of the ethics of care.
