Purpose

The purpose of this study was to verify the credibility and validity of "the childrearing capability scale for mothers raising a one-year-old infant(CC Scale)", in order to comprehensively capture their childrearing capability and, eventually, provide them with appropriate support for childrearing.

Methods

An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted on mothers raising a one-year-old infant, by using nine sub-scales and 110 scale items employed for "the draft CC Scale". The scale items were selected and determined by conducting a factor analysis and determining the I-T correlation after a primary component analysis for each of the sub-scale items. The internal consistency was evaluated by calculating Cronbach's α- and θ coefficients for each of the sub-scales. For the validity of the CC Scale, the constitutive concept validity was verified by examining the criterion-related validity using two external scales, then, the overall integrity of the scale was checked and the confirmative factor analysis was also conducted.

Results

The effective answers were received from 267 respondents. The α coefficient of the sub-scales varied from 0.961 to 0.663, and the difference between the credibility θ coefficient and the α coefficient was within the small range from 0.001 to 0.015. The CC Scale had a relatively strong correlation with both "Self-efficacy Scale on Childrearing" and "Sense of Coherence(SOC-13) Scale", thus, the criterion-related validity was confirmed. The CC Scale also had a relatively strong positive correlation with the nine sub-scales, which were shown to be categorized into three clumps, thus, the constitutive validity of the CC Scale was confirmed.

Conclusion

The CC Scale is a one-dimensionally structured scale consisting of 71 scale items under nine sub-scales, and its credibility and validity were duly verified.
