The purpose of this study is to discover the trends and future challenges for national and international research focusing on the sense of coherence in patients with physical diseases. Presently, international research is actively conducted mainly in Northern Europe, while reports from within Japan are also increasing. However, there are few reports on the influence a patient's sense of coherence has prospectively. Age, sex, education, marital status, disease type, disease duration, restrictions on physical activity, and the presence of supporters are variables affecting a patient's sense of coherence. Meanwhile, a patient's sense of coherence affects their strategy of coping with stress and physical condition. Furthermore, QOL and psychiatric condition are believed to have a relationship of mutual influence with sense of coherence. These facts suggest the necessity of assistance that supports a sense of coherence in patients. Accumulating research that reveals the details of support influencing sense of coherence in patients is suggested as a future challenge.
