It is well known that chronic schizophrenic patients show symptoms such as emotional flatness, decreased motivation and disinterest. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a cosmetic group on these symptoms of the chronic schizophrenic patient from the viewpoint of volition. Ten schizophrenic patients participated in cosmetic group therapy once a week for 6 months, and were evaluated with the Volitional Questionnaire of the Model of Human Occupation, after each therapy session. Results showed that patients who joined the cosmetic group significantly improved in scores of "Seeks challenges" and "Is lively/energetic". On the other hand, the scores of "Seeks additional responsibilities" and "Engages others" did not change very much. This study demonstrated that patients can improve the volition subsystem participating in cosmetic group therapy.
