Social stories have come to receive much attention as an effective intervention method for solving social communication problems of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD). However, the effectiveness of social stories has not been verified either critically or systematically. The author analyzed case studies which report the effectiveness of intervention using social stories, and identified the objects of intervention, the target behaviors, and the degree of effectiveness in each target area. It was found that social stories were mainly used with school-age high-functioning ASD children, and they seemed to be effective for solving communication/language problems. Based on these findings, a single subject experimental study for an ASD child with communication problems was conducted to verify the effectiveness of social stories. The result showed that the intervention using social stories had a positive effect on diminishing inadequate social behaviors of this child. This case seems to provide evidence of the effectiveness of intervention using social stories to school-age high-functioning ASD children with communication problems.
