The respiratory and cardiovascular systems have separate dynamic cycles in which the respiration cycle and cardiac cycle are involuntarily controlled by distinct mechanisms. However, these side-by-side systems have mutual interactions, referred to as the heart-lung interaction. Alterations in gas pressure in the lung results in dynamic changes in the liquid in the heart and large vessels. Therefore, variations in the cycle of airway pressure greatly affect cardiovascular hemodynamics, especially when positive pressure ventilation is used in critically ill patients. Since the effects of respiration on hemodynamics are far more complicated than the effects of hemodynamics on the respiratory system, we discuss the former effects in this review.
