 The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between professional autonomy in nursing and nurses' work environment and consciousness. Three-hundred and eleven professional nurses in the public hospital were administered a questionnaire including the scales for professional autonomy in nursing developed by Kikuchi & Harada (1996) and the items of nurses' work environment and consciousness. Nurses' work environment variables used in this study were the work conditions, the relationship of her with head nurse, staff nurse and the other medical staff. Nurses' work consciousness variables selected nurses' perceptions of carrier, work satisfaction, intention to continue at work as a nurse. This study was compared with three groups of two or less years, three to ten years and more than ten years of experience as nurse.

 The main results were as follows; (1) In two or less years of experience group, an adaptability to work and nurses' perceptions of carrier were the most explicable variables of professional autonomy in nursing. (2) In three to ten years of experience group, the relations with head nurse and other medical staff, an adaptability to work, nurses' perceptions of carrier, work satisfaction were important determinants of a professional autonomy in nursing. (3) In eleven and over years of experience group, nurses' perceptions of carrier was the only variable related to professional autonomy in nursing.
