  • Look Inside

Glycopeptides and glycosaminoglycans in middleear effusions taken from the patients with acute otitis media (AOM) and secretory otitis media (SOM) were examined. Samples of SOM were classified into child serous type, child glue type, and adult serous type. These samples were analysed by cellulose acetate membrane electrophoresis with alcian blue and high iron diamine stainings. The results were as follows.

 1. All samples contained glycopeptides derived from mucin.

 2. Many of serous type in SOM samples contained chondroitin sulfate AC, dermatan sulfate, heparan sulfate, and hyaluronic acid. Especially, adult serous type in SOM samples contained a large quantity of them.

 3. Child glue type in SOM samples contained low glycosaminoglycans.
