  • Look Inside

Stapedial reflex in 108 cases of peripheral facial palsy was investigated during the two years offollow-up period : following results and conclusions were obtained.

 1. Of the 108 patients, 75 showed suprastapedial lesion at the onset of the palsy. This high incidence of suprastapedial lesion declined with the passage of time and at the check-up 4 months later, the suprastapedial lesion was detectable in only 2 cases.

 2. A good correlation was seen between the recovery rate of the facial palsy and the time of stapedial reflex restoration in cases of suprastapedial lesion. The earlier the restoration of the stapedial reflex occur better be the recovery of the facial palsy.

 3. In 2 cases of Hunt's syndrome, the stapedial reflex remained normal during the entire course of observation.

 4. The stapedial reflex-test is of vital importance not only for topographic diagnosis of facial palsy but, also, for deriving the prognosis of the case. Therefore, this test is recommanded for a routine procedure to determine the time and the choice of surgical approaches.
