The coordinated migration of neurons is a pivotal step for functional architectural formation of the cerebral cortex. In radial migration in the cerebral cortex, post-mitotic neurons, generated in the ventricular zone, migrate through the intermediate zone to reach superficial layers of the cortical plate, just beneath the marginal zone. Genetic approaches of human and murine mutants have identified several key molecules involved in the cortical neuronal migration, such as Reelin, mDab1, ApoER2/VLDLR, Cdk5, p35, Lis1, Doublecortin and Filamin A. In addition, real-time imaging of migrating neurons or cell biological and biochemical studies revealed some molecular pathways regulating this migration. In this review, we describe the recently clarified molecular machinery involved in the cortical neuronal migration, introducing a novel approach using in utero electroporetion.
