Abstract Background:Scheduled health checkup of the eye and vision in infants is conducted by health nurses, children's welfare department, and ophthalmologists in Gunma Prefecture.

Purpose:To report past status and outcome of our campaign regarding dissemination of information regarding intellectual development of infants and to include refractometry in the scheduled medical checkup.

Results:In May 2016, health checkup was conducted for infants aged 3 years 0 to 4 months in 26 municipalities and in infants aged 3 years 4 to 7 months in 9 municipalites in Gunma Prefecture. There was no meeting to explain intellectual and visual development of infants to parents. Refractometry was made in 4 municipalities. After our campaign, refractometry was conducted or scheduled in 20 and 14 municipalities respectively. Children's welfare department of the Prefecture decided to hold meetings for the staff and to publish manuals.

Conclusion:Quality of health checkup for 3-year infants improved following clarification of underlying problems in Gunma Prefecture. Refractometry became possible in areas with no resident ophthalmogists after introduction of automated refractometer.
