Abstract Purpose:To report the current status of ophthalmological care of patients with diabetes mellitus aged 90 years or over.

Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 117 diabetic patients who visited the medical department of Diabetes Center of Tokyo Women's Medical University during 6 months through September 2017. They were evaluated regarding personal background, state of diabetic retinopathy and history of ophthalmological treatment.

Result:In the present series, 52 patients(44%)were seen by physicians but not by ophthalmologists in the past 2 years. Ophthalmological department was visited once a year by 16 patients(25%), every 6 months by 14 patients(22%), and every one to 4 months by 35 patients(54%). There was no patient who was found to have active diabetic retinopathy at the last visit. There was no patient who had received retinal photocoagulation for the prevention of active proliferative retinopathy for diabetic retinopathy in the past 10 years or who received fluorescein fundus angiography in the past 5 years.

Conclusion:Diabetic patients aged 90 years or over had no active retinopathy nor particular eye care. These supersenile patients do not need regular ophthalmological examinations. They are advised o be seen by ophthalmologist only when they develop eye symptoms.
