北京同仁医院眼科を訪ねて

Tong-Ren Hospital in Peking. Report of a Visit.

　一昨年11月26日の寒い朝，私は北京市崇文門の近くにある北京同仁医院に張暁楼教授Chang Shiao-Louを訪ねた。数日前，私が東四猪大街にある中華医学会を訪問した際，初めて張教授とお会いした時にお願いしていた病院見学の約束が本日実現したのである。張暁楼教授は，この同仁医院眼科の責任者であるが，北京医学院の眼科教授であり，又北京市眼科研究所副所長もして居られ，トラコーマ学者としても名高い。1955年より57年にかけて，湯飛凡らが鷄卵の胚胎を用いてトラコーマウイルスを分離培養するのに成功した時，1958年初，張先生はその培養されたトラコーマウイルスを自分の左眼に接種して，40余日にわたる観察実験をおこない，トラコーマウイルスを分離確認するまで治療をおこなわなかつた話は広く知られている。

　約束した時間に車が豪壮な病院の構内にはいると，前庭に早くも白衣を着た張教授が出迎えて居られた。先生の案内でエレベーベータに乗つて五階に上り，一室でこの病院の沿革と現状について次の様な説明をうかがつた。

A description of the Tong-Ren Hospital in Peking is presented as seen by the author as a traveling ophthalmologist. The Hospital, which had been founded as a charity institu-tion by American Christians in Peking about 80 years ago, has been nationalised and enla-rged since 1958. An account is given about the current mode of therapy and operations, which are not basically different from those in the western hemisphere, and about the Welfare system in the People's Republic of China.
