Background:Patients were objectively evaluated for possible gender differences in carpel tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Method:Fifty-eight male patients and 200 female with CTS patients were compared on a stage 1-5 electrophysiological severity scale.

Outcome:Preoperatively, stage 4 was the most common stage in the male group (24 of 58 patients-41.4%), and stage 5 was the most common stage in the female group (99 out of 200 patients-49.5%). The “severe” (stage 4 or 5) cases accounted for similar percentages of both genders, 47 male patients (81%) and 168 female patients (80%). One-year postoperatively, at least one stage improvement was observed in 45 of 58 male patients (77.6%) and in 175 of 200 female patients (87.5%), and the numbers of "mild" cases (stage 1 or 2) had significantly increased in both the male group (from 6.9% to 51.7%) and female group (from 4.5% to 55.0%) (p<0.0001).

Conclusion:We concluded that there were no significant gender differences in the severity of CTS or the outcome of carpal tunnel release (CTR) based on assessments by the electrophysiological severity scale.
