We have been developing Brief Scale for Psychiatric Problems in Orthopaedic Patients (BS-POP) to evaluate their psychiatric problems more simply than by such methods as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Our purpose was to verify the validity of BS-POP compared to MMPI. BS-POP, MMPI, and the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain were studied in 125 patients with spinal disorders. The most significant correlation between BS-POP (for doctors) and the MMPI scale was observed in “hysteria,” followed by “hypochondriasis.” The strongest correlation between BS-POP (for patients) and the MMPI scale was observed in “hysteria” followed by “hypochondriasis” and “depression.” These results suggest that BS-POP has the validity required for a scale in examining psychiatric problems in patients with spinal disorders.
