The prevalence of small intestinal mucosal injury has been reported to be >80% in NSAIDs(nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug)users. However, methods for prevention and treatment of NSAIDs-induced small intestinal injury have not been well established. The efficacy of PPI(proton pump inhibitors)in preventing NSAIDs-induced upper gastrointestinal mucosal injury has been reported, but their efficacy in the management of mucosal injury in the small intestine, which are devoid of gastric acid, remains uncertain. Several reports have also indicated that changes in the intestinal microbial flora affect the onset of NSAIDs-induced small intestinal mucosal injury. Some existing drugs reported to be effective in preventing and/or treating this small intestinal injury include some gastromucoprotective drugs, certain antibiotics, and probiotics.
