  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In this paper are elucidated general concepts of Crohn's disease and similar diseases based upon the definition of CIOMS. Practical problems, especially the clinical manifestations, of Crohn's disease are also discussed by analyzing clinical data of each four our operated cases of Crohn's disease, non-specific ulcer of the small intestine and prestomal ileitis, as well as 9 cases of granulomatous colitis and 23 ulcerative colitis.

In Japan Crohn's disease has been considered to present mostly symptoms similar to those of accute appendicitis, and chronic cases have been presumed to be rare.

Since, however, we are now having its reports with clinical manifestations similar to those in Western countries, we eagerly expect a day will soon come when its real nature be brought to light not by X-ray alone but also by the aid of excellent techniques of endoscopy, by elucidation of immunologic aspects and by electron-microscopic procedures.
