Gastric polyps with stalk (296 cases of the resected stomachs, 967 cases of the biopsied materials), which correspond to Type Ⅲ and Ⅳ of Yamada's classification, were classified histologically into hyperplastic polyp (HP) and adenomatous polyp (AP) and frequency and rate of malignant transformation of the polyps were compared in both types.

HP was high in frequency (88~96% of all gastric polyp) but low in rate of the malignant transformation (0.3~0.6% of all hyperplastic polyps). On the contrary, AP was low in frequency (0.6~2.0% of all gastric polyps) but was high in malignant transformation (70~80% of all adenomatous polyps). This tendency was more remarkable in the biopsied materials than in the resected stomachs.

As histological criteria of the malingnant transformation of gastric polyp, importance of histological structures and cytological changes of the polypous lesions were stressed.
