An endoscope enabling the examiner to observe and make biopsy of all the nooks and crevices of the gastric lumen is one of the most important means for morphological approach to the study of chronic gastritis. Although the development of biopsy under direct vision greatly facilitated morphological analysis of a spot of the gastric mucosa as distinguished from its plane, behavior of the gastric mucosa in chronic gastritis having some degree of extent is only insufficiently understood by the analysis alone of the histopathology of a spot in the mucosa. For overcoming the limitations of biopsical procedures hitherto employed, various methods have been elaborated. It is true therefore that some kind of systematic mode of biopsy must be introduced to meet the situation, but never should it be performed in a uniform and standardized manner; on every occasion a most appropriate procedure must be contrived to achieve the objective of every optional examination. It is seen in this light and to analyze fully the behavior of the gastric mucosa in chronic gastritis that a dozen biopsy method as well as stepwise biopsical procedure has been worked out.

This paper deals with the significance of biopsy in the study of chronic gastritis, centering on the stepwise biopsy of the lesser and greater curvatures devised for evaluation of chronological transition of the fundic-pyloric border.
