A total of 2364 cases of early gastric cancer has been studied in this paper operated on in 22 institutions during the 6 years and 10 months Jan. 1962 to Oct. 1968. Its type classification is based on that of the Japan Society for Endoscopy; technical procedures in operative surgery as well as histological methods of investigation are in strict accordance with an agreement made by the Society for Gastric Cancer Study. All cases of early gastric cancer during the 2 years 1962 to 1963 have been studied in detail by going over all personal cards of patients, and their five-year survival rate has been investigated by grouping them into such categories as: type of cancer, age, sex, location, method of operation, stage of advancement (S,P,H,N and n), degree of lymph-node resection, size of lesion, histological type and the degree of depth invasion.

Multiple cancer has also been referred to, together with the analysis of causes of deaths in mortal cases.

The results thus obtained, collected together on the basis of minute investigations in 22 institutions, are considered to provide an important index for evaluating encl results of early gastric cancer at the present time.

It is expected that, whenever occasion arises, this kind of collective analysis shall be carried on, so that more long-term end results of early gastric cancer may be obtained based on the study of a greater number of such cases. In fact, proper evaluation of end results in early gastric cancer cannot be justified unless not only five-year survival rate but also the figure for ten years, or even for 15 years, is secured.
