  • Look Inside

There are two purposes to perform the arteriopraphy. The one is to know the change of the artery itself and the other is to realize the site and the nature of tumor by analyzing the secondary change of vessels. How to perform the arteriography of abdomen and the effectiveness of this examination are described. Arteriography of abdominal organs is performed by selective method using the catheter. The catheter is guided into the aorta through the femoral artery by the method deviced by Seldinger under the observation of X-ray television. The tip of the catheter is put in the desired branch. The arteriography of the following arteries are usually done; A. coeliaca, A. mesenterica sup. et inf., A. renalis, A. diaphragmatica inf., A. suprarenalis and A. lumbaris.

The arteriography of the renal artery is performed most often and most effective but in this article, this is not described. After Ödman had performed the selective arteriography from coeliac artery, arteriographies of liver, spleen and pancreas were performed by many researchers.

Some details of arteriography in each organs are described. The selective arteriography of superior or inferior mesenteric artery is useful for diagnosing the tumor and the inflamation of small intestine and colon. About the pancreas; the arteriography of cancer, sarcoma, tumor at the Langerhans islet, non-beta islet cell carcinoma (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome), chronic pancreatitis, cyst and benign tumors is mentioned.

About the liver; the arteriography of hepatoma, metastatic cancer, cholangioma, benign tumors, cyst, liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension is referenced. Diseases of gall bladder and hepatic duct (out side of liver) are mentioned. About the spleen; the arteriography of Banti's syndrome, cyst, malignant lymphoma and hamartoma is described. For diagnosing the diseases in stomach and intestine, the arteriography has few merit. Aneurysm and the stenosis of artery are also referenced. Some cases which were performed the abdominal arteriography, are presented.
