  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Esophageal ulceration secondary to medicinal agents has rarely been reported. We have treated a patient with esophageal ulceration associated with the ingestion of sodium 2-phenylacetate (a volteren tablet).

A 23-year-old woman came to us because of the onset of severe, retrosternal burning pain that awakened her from sleep. She has taken a voltaren tablet without water and promptly gone to sleep, as self-treatment of a “common cold”.

Esophageal roentgenogram and esophagoscopy revealed five large, discrete ulcers located 26 cm from incisors.

She was treated with antacids and a bland diet and improved rapidly. Esophageal roentgenogram one month later showed no vestige of ulcers.
