We defined slight mucosal elevation with 3 mm in size and red as polypous bud. Investigation was performed endoscopically, histopathologically and from follow-up study, concerning characteristics of polypous bud and its growth. Therefore, the following results were obtained.

 1) Antrum is the favorite site in the stomach and polypous bud is inclined to occur near the polyp present already.

 2) Histology of polypous bud corresponds to the histology suspicious of hyperplastic polyp (B) and this histology is presumed to develop into one of typical hyperplastic polyp as polypous bud grows up.

 3) 48 lesions of polypous bud were followed up more than 6 months. So 10 lesions out of those were observed to develop into Yamada's type II~IV polyps. Therefore some type of polyp grows out of polypous bud.

 4) Polypous bud includes polypous bud-like lesions such as redness due to chronic gastritis and minute polyp, which has completed its growth already. This is one of reason for low rate of growth from polypous bud.

 5) Our definition for polypous bud seems to satisfy characteristics of polypous bud. Polypous bud is thought to be the earliest stage of polyp detected by endoscopy in the process of polypous growth.
