  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Now most colonic polyps may be safely removed endoscopically using the fiberoptic colonoscopy. Diagnosis of focal cancer is very difficult by small specimens of biopsy. So in these cases the most important thing is detailed examination of endoscopically removed polyps.

A total of 93 polyps in 67 cases were polypectomied by endoscopy during the period of three years from January 1973 to June 1976. In these cases 65 polyps in 44 cases were colonic polyps. The incidence of malignant change was 18.7% for 64 polyps analyzed. But it is needed to clarify terminology and to differentiate between focal cancer and invasive cancer whenever possible.

Focal cancer does not recur or metastasize and requires no treatment other than polyp removal. When invasive cancer is present colectomy is always required.

Colonoscopy is an important component of the follow-up program, whether malignant polyps are resected endoscopically or by the transabdominal route.
