  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

To make a definitive diagnosis of submucosal tumor, conventional biopsy or exfoliative cytology is often insufficient. We established a diagnostic technique of gastric lesions with endoscopic aspiration biopsy. Such cases have amounted to 162 from April 1972 to March 1974. The method and results of aspiration biopsy are reported in this paper.

Of 162, there are 12 cases of submucosal tumor consisting of 4 cases of leiomyoma, 1 of neurinoma, 5 of malignant lymphoma, 1 of cyst and 1 of aberrant pancreas. In addition, 3 cases of gastric cancer which were not indicated by bite biopsy are also included in the present study. Cytological diagnosis was successful in 9 of the 12 cases with submucosal tumor, and all of the 3 cases of gastric cancer as well. On the other hand, of 9 cases of submucosal tumor and 3 of gastric cancer, correct diagnosis was obtained by bite biopsy in only one case of malignant lymphoma.

Aspiration biopsy of the stomach is absolutely appropriate for histological diagnosis of submucosal tumor, particularly for the cases without ulceration. Moreover, hemorrhage is less as compared with bite biopsy. No complication has heretofore been experienced.
