  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Three cases of dilatation of the common bile duct are described. The first case, a 21-year old female was admitted to the Niigata University Hospital because of recurrent pain in the right hypochondrium. Retrograde endoscopic cholangiography showed a marked dilation of the common bile duct. She was well after resection of the common bile duct and gall-bladder with jejunohepaticostomy.

The second case, 22-year old female was referred to the University Hospital for further evaluation of pain in the right hypochondrium. Retrograde endoscopic cholangiography revealed both dilated common bile duct and bifurcation of hepatic duct. She refused operation and was treated symptomatically.

The third crse, a 42-year old man was transferred to the University Hospital for curative operation. One month before admission, he was seen at another hospital because of jaundice and pain in the right hypochondrium, where he was operated on for suspected of choledocholithiasis. Retrograde endoscopic cholangiography showed a saccate common bile duct. However, neither hepatic duct nor intrahepatic bile duct was visualized apparently due to lack to lack of contrast medium. An operation was done successfully.

It is concluded that retrograde endoscopic cholangiography is a valuable asset to the surgeon in the management of this disorder when carefully manipulated.
