Two hundred six cases of protruding lesions with gastric covering epithelium in the duodenal bulb were histopathologically classified into two types. One is heterotopic gastric mucosal type accompanied with gastric covering epithelium and histologically normal fundic glands tissue (HGM). Another is gastric epithelium metaplastic type accompanied with gastric covering epithelium without fundic glands tissue (GM). Endoscopically, they could be classified into four groups as follows. Sessile scattered type, clustered polypoid type, the erosive elevated type and the granular elevated type. The clustered polypoid type corresponded to HGM, and the erosive elevated type and granular elevated type corresponded to GM. Sessile scattered type was intermediate. In addition, Methylene blue dye stain could easily discriminate HGM from GM.
