Benign esophageal tumors and tumor-like lesions are uncommon and encompass a broad spectrum of epithelial, mesenchymal, vascular, and inflammatory lesions. Recent advances in image-enhanced endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS)have enabled improved detection and characterization of these lesions, resulting in more accurate preoperative diagnosis.

Representative lesions include squamous papilloma, granular cell tumor, capillary hemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, inflammatory esophagogastric junction polyp, inflammatory fibroid polyp(IFP), and fibrovascular polyp(FVP). Although most of these lesions exhibit distinctive endoscopic features, differentiating them from malignant tumors and other subepithelial lesions can occasionally be challenging.

This review summarizes the endoscopic, endosonographic, and histopathological features of representative benign esophageal tumors and tumor-like lesions based on illustrative cases, emphasizing practical diagnostic approaches and differential diagnosis.
