During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, emergency physicians and infectious disease physicians played major roles in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. However, because their manpower is limited, we anesthesiologists can and should also play active roles in the care of severely ill patients during the next pandemic. To do so, we too must participate in critical care, rapid response team activities, and the education of other medical professionals outside the operating room during the regular, non-pandemic period. Work style reform, which will be implemented in April 2024, should lead to a more efficient work style in the operating room and thereby allow time for anesthesiologists to engage in activities outside of the operating room.
